Vanuatu is ranked the third poorest country in the Pacific and has been accorded UN Least Developed Country status since 1995, with an adult literacy rate at 33.5 per cent and life expectancy of 66 years. There is evidence of increasing poverty in Vanuatu, with decreasing opportunity to access essential services. The challenges facing young people (60 per cent of the population is under 25 years of age) are growing, with limited employment opportunities. Vanuatu is experiencing an increase in crime, domestic violence and substance abuse.
Each assignment delivered in Vanuatu addresses one or more of the following objectives:
