While Fiji is considered to be relatively well placed in comparison with other Pacific island neighbours, its troubled sugar, garment, fishing and mahogany industries, and continued loss of skilled workers through emigration, is hampering its growth. There is evidence of increasing poverty in Fiji today, particularly in the rural and outer islands. Squatter settlements continue to increase in urban areas and approximately 40 per cent earn below the poverty line.
Each assignment delivered in Fiji addresses one or more of the following objectives:
1. Promote the growth and development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to achieve sustainable livelihoods.
2. Improve the quality of vocational education by building the capacity of local institutions.
3. Strengthen the governance capabilities of key organisations through the delivery of targeted training programs.
