Health Issues

Before departing for an assignment, Volunteers must have a comprehensive ABV medical form completed and signed by their local GP. Vaccinations may be required and ABV will pay for any necessary vaccinations indicated by their doctor. Elective vaccinations must be paid for by the Volunteer.

It may be difficult or impossible to obtain prescription medications in developing countries so Volunteers are advised to carry enough of a necessary medication to tide them over for the entire assignment period and a little extra should their return home be delayed for any reason. Those who require optical glasses should take a spare pair with them. A basic first aid kit is also advisable.

The ABV website will contain information about health alerts in developing countries (e.g. Avian Influenza) but Volunteers are advised to visit the website of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade well before they leave Australia, for the most up-to-date information.

In short, it is the responsibility of Volunteers to ensure that they are as prepared as possible before leaving Australia!
